Woody Allen takes us on a surreal journey where humor blends with the absurd in an ironic and sharp dance. A must-read for those who love to laugh and reflect.

The absurd adventures of Woody Allen

"Getting Even" is a collection of short stories where Woody Allen catapults us into surreal worlds filled with quirky dialogues and paradoxical situations. Allen mocks everything and everyone, including himself and the readers, with a series of bizarre characters navigating through literary parodies and pseudo-philosophical reflections. Each story is a dive into a sea of absurdity, where the rules of logic are set aside to make room for sharp irony and borderline grotesque situations.

The collection opens with a witty analysis of the academic system's incongruence, where a philosophy professor finds himself in an epic dispute with a supermarket cashier about the meaning of life. Next, a story follows a man forced to confront his literary alter ego, an idealized and annoyingly perfect version of himself. Then there's the parody of a detective novel where an utterly inept detective tries to solve an art theft mystery, only to discover the stolen piece is actually an art world scam. Allen also explores themes like obsession and vanity through stories where characters find themselves in absurd situations that expose their weaknesses and quirks. Each story is a tapestry of irony and humor that reflects the contradictions and flaws of modern society. The stories are short but packed with meaning, like brushstrokes on a canvas of madness. The reader finds themselves laughing at their own flaws, their small daily obsessions, viewed through the distorting lens of Allen's humor.

Woody Allen between laughter and madness

"Getting Even" by Woody Allen is a perfect blend of irony and intelligence. The fragmented yet cohesive narrative structure keeps the reader glued to the page. Each story is a small masterpiece of sarcasm and reflection, featuring characters straight out of an absurd comedy. Allen plays with words and situations, creating hilarious dialogues and improbable scenarios that make you laugh and think simultaneously. However, the excessive self-referentiality and constant use of internal jokes can be heavy at times for those who are not die-hard fans of his style. Ultimately, "Getting Even" is a book to be savored in small doses, ideal for those who love intelligent humor and out-of-the-box stories.

Allen's ability to bring out the ridiculous from the everyday is admirable, and his writing maintains a perfect balance between comedy and reflection. However, it must be said that some stories might come across as too self-referential, a sort of "Woody Allen quoting Woody Allen" ad infinitum. If you’re not a fan of his style, you might find this book a bit too self-indulgent. That said, if you love refined humor and sharp reflections, "Getting Even" will offer you moments of pure brilliance. In conclusion, Allen gives us a series of narrative gems, each with its dose of irony and introspection, that will surely make those who can appreciate them reflect and smile.

Why I Recommend It

I recommend it because Woody Allen knows how to turn human flaws into comedic art, making you laugh at the paradoxes of life. His stories are a distorted mirror of reality, where irony reigns supreme.

Why I Don’t Recommend It

I don’t recommend it because if you don’t appreciate surreal humor and sharp irony, you might find Allen’s stories too self-referential and his paradoxes a bit forced. Better avoid it if you’re looking for straightforward reads.
