Super Mario hits the big screen with breathtaking graphics and a load of nostalgia. But does it manage to stand tall, or does it fall down the pipe? Let’s find out!

From game to the big screen

Super Mario, the legendary Italian plumber, leaps from the video game world to the big screen. If you grew up jumping on goombas and dodging green shells, this film promises a nostalgic dive into that 8-bit kingdom. But is the movie adaptation up to the task, or does it end up getting lost in the pipes? The film seems to rely heavily on nostalgia, giving old and new fans the chance to see their favorite characters brought to life with stunning visuals. But the real question is: will the story win you over, or is it just a leap into the void?

When the eyes have fun, but the heart stays out

The first thing that strikes you about "Super Mario" is the graphics. Every detail is designed to make you feel like you’re inside the game, from the piranha plants to the floating blocks. The animations are perfect, and if you’re a fan of the saga, you’ll recognize every corner of the Mushroom Kingdom. However, when it comes to the story, things get tricky. The plot follows a predictable path, with few moments of real suspense or innovation. It’s a film that leans on nostalgia, with constant references to the games, but it never really dares to bring anything new to the table. In other words, it’s a treat for the eyes, but a bit less so for the mind.

Saving Peach… again

The movie follows Mario and Luigi, two plumber brothers from Brooklyn, who are magically transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. Here, they must, of course, save Princess Peach, who has been kidnapped by Bowser, the same old villain. Expect no surprises or twists; the plot is as simple as the original game. But that’s exactly what fans love, right? Chasing after Peach, fighting giant turtles, and jumping from level to level. If you love the game, you’ll appreciate this nostalgic trip. But if you’re looking for a more intricate story, you might be left wanting more.

A film for fans, but not for everyone

Visually, Super Mario is a triumph. Every detail, from the character designs to the settings, has been carefully crafted. The graphics manage to capture the essence of the game and elevate it to a new level without betraying the original spirit. However, the story leaves something to be desired. The screenplay feels like a patchwork of scenes designed to wink at fans without developing an engaging plot or well-defined characters. If you’re a die-hard fan of the game, you’ll probably enjoy it, but if you’re looking for a film with a more solid narrative, you might find Super Mario a bit flat.

Why I Recommend It

I recommend it because the graphics are stunning, and it knows how to take you back in time to when you were jumping on enemies with Mario. It’s a visual treat for those who loved the video game and want to relive those emotions.

Why I Don't Recommend It

I don’t recommend it because the plot is shallow and too linear. If you’re looking for a film that offers something more in terms of narrative, you might be disappointed. The film seems more interested in reliving the past than offering anything new.
