Gudetama is the Japanese TV series that mixes humor and laziness. Find out if it's worth your time or if it's better left in the shell.

Feeling Stressed? Fry Up an Egg with Gudetama

f your life is a never-ending race against time and your only wish is to wrap yourself up in a blanket like a human burrito, then Gudetama might just be the series for you. Let's be honest: this isn't your typical adrenaline-pumping show, but a relaxing (perhaps too relaxing) journey into the world of Japan's laziest chick. Picture yourself sitting in front of the TV after a long day, wondering: “Do I really want to engage with something demanding right now?” The answer might be a lukewarm “No, thanks,” and in that case, Gudetama is your escape route. A chick that doesn’t feel like doing anything, but absolutely anything, might sound like a narrative risk, but surprisingly, it works... more or less. Let's dive into why.

Gudetama, the Hero You Don't Deserve, but Definitely Don't Need

Sanrio, the genius behind Hello Kitty, decided to launch Gudetama, a character who is the exact opposite of everything else. Where you’d expect energy, you find emptiness; where there should be action, there’s only inaction. Each episode follows Gudetama as he faces life with the same enthusiasm as an overweight cat after lunch. The graphics are delightfully minimalist, a perfect contrast to the lazy nature of the protagonist. There's no real narrative arc; it's more of a stream of consciousness, or rather, unconsciousness, in which Gudetama drags himself from one day to the next. But be warned: beneath this torpor lies a subtly ironic message about modern society and its impossible expectations. If you're in the mood for some self-reflection, this series might offer some interesting insights. If, on the other hand, you're in the mood for a nap, it's equally perfect.

When Laziness Becomes a Miniature Art Form

The plot of Gudetama is as simple as a scrambled egg: few ingredients, no surprises, but tasty enough to keep you glued for a while. Each episode revolves around micro-daily situations that Gudetama faces with the grit of a retired sloth. There’s no build-up, no thrilling climax, just the slow passage of time as Gudetama wonders (and silently answers) why he should bother doing anything. The beauty of the series lies in this: making you reflect on why you, too, sometimes feel like an egg scrambled by life.

Gudetama, or the Subtle Charm of Laziness

Watching Gudetama is a bit like watching a sloth documentary: slow, almost hypnotic, but incredibly relaxing. The cinematography is essential, without frills, almost as if the animators had the same laziness as the protagonist. This isn’t a flaw; in fact, it’s a stylistic choice we could call “consistent.” The pastel colors and minimalist aesthetic perfectly reflect Gudetama’s indolent soul. The narrative pace is more akin to that of an old grandfather clock than a modern TV series, but it’s precisely in this slowness that its charm lies. There are no plot twists, and if you’re expecting a final twist that will turn everything upside down... I’m afraid you’re watching the wrong show. Gudetama isn’t in a hurry, and neither should you be.

Perché te lo consiglio

I recommend it because it perfectly captures, with lightness and disarming irony, one of the most common human flaws: laziness. If you appreciate humor that takes its time, this series is for you.

Perché non te lo consiglio

I don't recommend it because if you prefer fast-paced rhythms and action-packed dialogues, you might find it more sleep-inducing than entertaining. After all, not everyone enjoys the charm of slowness.
